About Tyndale Choral Society

SINGING FOR OVER 60 YEARS

Tyndale Choral Society was established in 1959 and now has more than 80 members who enjoy singing major choral works.

We draw members from a wide area around Dursley and Cam, including Wotton-under-Edge, Kingswood, Charfield, North Nibley, Berkeley, Coaley and Uley, and from as far as Tetbury and Nailsworth.  Our regular rehearsal venue is the Dursley Tabernacle, which also hosts our Christmas concert, and we perform in a number of local churches, especially St James’s, Dursley.

Our recent performances have included Handel’s Messiah, Bach’s St John Passion, Haydn’s Missa Sancti Nicolai, Mozart’s Requiem, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle, Alexander L’Estrange’s Zimbe!, and An Evening at the Opera.  A full list of our past performances can be found here:

Estelle James, one of our founding members, writes:

Way back in the 1950s, North Nibley Church Choir was fortunate enough to have a new choir mistress in the person of Molly Neale, who had just come to live in the area, having retired from her role as a professional soprano soloist.  Under her leadership the choir flourished and in 1959 the augmented choir with professional soloists and with Dr Herbert Sumsion at the organ, sang Haydn's "The Creation".   This was such a great success that Molly decided it would be good to keep the choir singing together - and so Tyndale Choral Society was born!’

For more than ten years now, we have been under the guidance of our outstanding Music Director, Ben Sawyer.  In 2023, he was joined as our rehearsal accompanist by one of the country’s leading pianists, Chris Guild.
